Pony Fiction Archive Banner

Pony Fiction Archive, a My Little Pony fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

The Pony Fiction Archive was the first dedicated My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfiction archive, and contains works from the very early days of the fandom that aren't available elsewhere. The PFA's goal has always been to keep these works available to future readers, but evolving web standards guarantee that at some point the PFA would not be able to stay online. Importing the PFA to the Archive of Our Own ensures this slice of fandom history will remain available indefinitely.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with RBDash47 to import the Pony Fiction Archive into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfiction currently in the Pony Fiction Archive will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages. Eventually, links to the old site will redirect to the collection on AO3, which can be searched and filtered in order to locate individual imported works.

We will begin importing works from the Pony Fiction Archive to the AO3 after April.

What does this mean for creators who have work(s) on the Pony Fiction Archive?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will invite it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors. We will then permanently close down the site.

Please contact Open Doors with your Pony Fiction Archive pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3.
  5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your Pony Fiction Archive account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the Pony Fiction Archive mod to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you still have questions...

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of Pony Fiction Archive on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We're excited to be able to help preserve the Pony Fiction Archive!

Spotlight on Open Doors

Animators Inc., an Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

Animators Inc. / Anita Blake Puddu's Site was the biggest Italian community about Anita Blake, opened by Puddu in 2007. The old website has now been closed for some years (since 2015), and after a lot of "wouldn't it be beautiful if our terrific fanfiction were still online?", its members finally decided to find a new home for their works, to keep the material available for their own comfortable use and for the enjoyment of the masses.

Open Doors will be working with Puddu, Flora and Rubina to import Animators Inc. into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfiction currently in Animators Inc. will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from Animators Inc. to the AO3 after March.

The Library of Moria, a Tolkien slash, femslash, gen, and RPF fanfiction and fanart archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

The Library of Moria was founded in 2002 as one of the first Lord of the Rings archives, but quickly grew in scope and popularity. The archivists have lovingly kept the Library of Moria running for nearly two decades, but with the announcement that the eFiction software that runs the archive will not be updated, they realize it is only a matter of time before the archive is rendered unusable. They are moving the archive to the AO3 to ensure that it stays online for all of those who have enjoyed it over the years to revisit for decades more.

As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all images currently in the Library of Moria will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages. Eventually links to the old site will redirect to the collection on AO3, which can be searched and filtered in order to locate individual imported works.

Spotlight on Open Doors

Open Doors is pleased to announce the completion of 12 archive import projects in 2021, a total of over 4000 works! We hope that you will find old and new favorites in the collections listed below.

---

DoyleCordy

Completed: April 2021

DoyleCordy was a mailing list focusing on the Cordelia/Doyle ship of Angel (the Series). Following the closure of Yahoo Groups, the mods wanted to preserve the small portion of the fanfiction they were able to save. Find works at the DoyleCordy AO3 Collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the DoyleCordy import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the DoyleCordy Fanlore page.

Rawhide-fic

FebobeFic Archive

Completed: June 2021

At the time of the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies, Frodo-Baggins-Of-Bag-End (Febobe) became known in fanfic circles for creating Frodo-centric, hurt/comfort fic. So invested was she in the genre that she even set up a Yahoo group called FrodoHealers, in which she not only shared her work but welcomed that of other writers. Sadly, due to her chronic illness, many of her works were never completed, but to protect those that were, Open Doors helped transfer her works to an archive on the AO3, something that she often spoke of doing herself one day. Find works at the FebobeFic Archive.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the FebobeFic import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Frodo Baggins of Bag End's Fanlore page.

---

Sarek and Amanda Archive

Completed: August 2021

Sarek and Amanda Archive was an archive for Star Trek: The Original Series fanfiction about the Sarek/Amanda pairing. The original archive, located at shaw.ca, was dissolved, so the archive was moved to AO3 in its entirety with the authors' permissions. Find works at the Sarek and Amanda Archive AO3 Collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Sarek and Amanda Archive import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Sarek and Amanda Archive Fanlore page.

The TPD was created at the end of 1999 under the name of "The Wonderful World of Thomas Eugene Paris". It continued to grow steadily, and held over 1300 works. Eventually the archivist, banshee, decided to close the archive and import its works to the AO3. Find works at the Tom Paris Dorm AO3 Collection.

For more information about the archive and its move to the AO3, see the Tom Paris Dorm import announcement post. To learn the history of the archive or to share some stories of your own, check out the Tom Paris Dorm Fanlore page.

Gilmore Girls Adult Fic

Completed: October 2021

From 2002 until 2016, GilmoreGirlsAdultFic strove to be a safe place for writers to write about their favorite Gilmore Girls couples without the limitations of the most prominent fic archive of the time, but also provided moderation and proper rules so that those who only wished to write misogynistic works about the Girls were not welcome. Though time has passed and Yahoo Groups no longer exists, the fandom and their ardor to see more about their characters than what broadcast television allowed has not. Find works at the Gilmore Girls Adult Fic AO3 Collection.

HarryPotterFanfiction.com, a Harry Potter fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

HarryPotterFanfiction.com initially opened in 2001, and as of 2021 contained over 85000 works by nearly 40000 authors. HPFF was no longer able to sustain itself financially, so the stories are being transferred to AO3 to save the many stories written by authors no longer with us.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors. We will then permanently close down the site.

Please contact Open Doors with your Echoes from the West pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive

If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your Echoes from the West account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the Echoes from the West mod to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of Echoes from the West on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We're excited to be able to help preserve Echoes from the West!
